SEEN ON THE STREET: samson
Very sad. On Tuesday, I was out for the evening with some friends, and had to lock my bike up stacked on a few others in front of the bar.
I noticed a fairly large smudge near the bottom bracket, and started wiping it off. A small bit didn’t come off, so I scraped at it with a nail… and the chainstay caved in.

After I rode home (carefully), I took the bike apart to check exactly how bad it was, tapping on the stays and cleaning out the bottom bracket shell.

It’s a mess. Both stays had large flakes of rust and tons of dust fall out. Fortunately, the seat and down tubes do not look that bad.

I believe the culprit was water in the vent holes in the stays, and then held in place by an oversized and well greased accordion sleeve in the bottom bracket shell holding water in place.
I haven’t decided what route to go with the bike yet, though Nagasawa has agreed to make the repair, if I so choose. Still thinking on it, but for now, unfortunately, the bike is hanging in the closet.
