the co-motion in motion.

Finally, FINALLY finished… after months of trying to figure out how best to put together this project, the Rohloff Speedhub/14 based Co-Motion Nor’wester is built!  The Rohloff really is something else…

kalavinka + bobike.

So, in order to get Owen as acclimated to cycling as early as possible Liz and I decided to throw a child seat on one of my bikes so that we’d have a way to get him out and about as soon as possible. There’s a lot of disagreement on whether child seats are supposed to be front mounted or rear-mounted, but it seems to me that it’s a large bit more interesting for a kid to sit in front and see the road than it is to sit behind and see… my sweaty back. So, I picked up a Bobike Mini front-mounted seat.  In order to use a front-mounted seat properly, you have to have a set of bars that allows you to properly reach around the child without whacking your chin into the back of his or her head.

Which brings us to this.

The bars are Nitto B602AA “angled touring” bars.  They’re as cruiser-ish as you’d expect, and pretty amusing.  Owen seems to like it.

sunday ride.

Days like today reinvigorate my faith in living in the city… rolled down to Chinatown to a spot called Nam Zhou Hand Pulled Noodle for some beef noodle soup and dumplings and Chinese soap operas blaring on the tv in the background as one of the shop guys beat and pulled a roll of dough into submission to produce… noodles.

Headed over the Manhattan Bridge to Brooklyn, rolling past an outdoor Baptist congregation at the Farragut Houses, hands waving and gospel playing, then through Wallabout passing Satmars with their families walking down (and almost getting mowed down by a Hassidic man in a minivan near Lee St. as he drove down the wrong side of the road.)

C Record Pista.

Cruised down Flushing for a while, and then had a Spanish guy in a teal Geo Tracker lean out the window and offer me a set of rims for my bike after asking if mine were steel or aluminum…

Rolled down Morgan St through industrial East Williamsburg, passed the “chrome boobs” of the power plant near Newtown Creek, then past the awful-smelling water treatment plant near the Greenpoint bridge.

Finally back home over the Queensboro Bridge, a nice ride in beautiful weather.

de rosa professional pista, revisited.

Fully built up and rolling again. None the worse the wear.

the car.

Spent about 4 hours washing and waxing the car on Friday. For some reason, I find the whole process relaxing (even though it is a lot of work.) For an eight year old car, it’s still looking good.

brooklyn botanic gardens.

Went out for the day to the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens to let Owen run around a bit, and take a few photographs.  Fun with the Voigtlander 125mm f2.5 APO-Lanthar Macro.
